Power and Nuclear Industries

Cranes supplied into this market is usually classified as high integrity. Such equipment incorporates many design features, which give added safety when working in hazardous environments. One such feature is the X-Sam system supplied under license from the Ederer Corporation of the USA, adapted by Butterley who modified it to meet the client’s specific needs. This system is currently fitted to cranes that work above the pile cap of several existing nuclear power stations and was selected by the Nuclear Industry for the polar crane which is installed above the Sizewell ‘B’ reactor.

Many cranes supplied into this specific market place often utilise sophisticated control systems and remote operation via pre-programmed PLC controllers, necessitated by the extremely hazardous working environments in certain areas.

Conventional power station cranes designed for single and tandem lifts are also supplied and include sophisticated controls.

Dockside Cranes

Butterley have extensive experience in the design, manufacture and installation of Dockside cranes. These range from general-purpose cranes to high performance grabbing cranes.
For unloading bulk materials with high throughputs the reeve-through grab cranes are used, which involve special-to-purpose designed equipment, using hold and close winches. The cranes are designed to give maximum reliability and sustained performance. The cranes can be provided with separate traveling hoppers or integral kangaroo hoppers depending on client specification, or interface with existing facilities.

Portal cranes are designed to meet specific applications and topliss revving is incorporated to give level luffing. Various luffing mechanisms can be provided including hydraulic, rope and rack systems.

The latest electronic equipment permits fine and accurate positional control of hook or grab in the most demanding of environments meeting stringent customer requirements.
