Devonport Royal Dockyard

Butterley contracted with Devonport Management Ltd. to design, manufacture and install 4 x 43t capacity and 3 x 9t capacity dockside jib cranes suitably qualified to withstand local earthquakes.

The cranes are used for servicing the nuclear submarine fleet and other dockyard duties. Due to restricted space available during dockyard refurbishment, the cranes were built local to the relevant dock and floated/lifted in one piece into final position using a 1700t capacity floating crane

Electronic Overhead Polar Crane

The contract was awarded in 1986 for design, manufacture installation and test of a 450t SWL Polar Crane for the new PWR Nuclear Power Station at Sizewell 'B'.

The crane is a twin box girder 44m span crane rotating on a circular track above the nuclear reactor with extra safety and monitoring (X-SAM) incorporated.

The crane was used for the original placement of the reactor and now performs re-fueling duties.

Dockside Grabbing Cranes

Four hydraulic level-luffing cranes were supplied to ABP at Hull Docks in 1992, fully designed, manufactured and installed by Butterley.

Crane assembly was carried out on an adjacent quay to minimise disruption to port operations before being transferred across to Dock using a heavy floating crane.
